FGI – 305 Protective Coating
Unique Coatings – Extreme
Results
Description
FGI-305 was developed in 1960 as a
simplified, permanent finish for swimming pools of gunite, concrete block,
or cast concrete side walls and floors. FGI-305 is a high solids content
decorative and protective epoxy coating especially developed for swimming
pools which after all the years on the market is unsurpassed in performance.
Outdoor durability and color stability is excellent. FGI-305 is extremely
Weather, UV, Chemical, Salt, and Abrasion resistant providing for an
unsurpassed durable wear surface with superior adhesion properties that
promotes a nearly indestructible coating surface. FGI-305 is twice as
resistant to abrasion as concrete. This information was secured by rotating
a diamond faced tool over FGI-305 and concrete surfaces and comparing the
number of revolutions required to grind through three mils (.003) of
material. It required twice as many revolutions to penetrate FGI-305 as it
did concrete. Also for use in tunnels, concrete tanks, silos, elevators,
etc. interior or exterior.
Application Methods
FGI - 305 may be applied by brush,
roller, or spray. Application is best, when rolled or sprayed at a rate
of 200 sq. ft. per gallon. Allow the first coat to dry 4 to 6 hours and
apply the second coat the same as the first, being sure to coat
everything the second time. This will produce a 11-12 mil film that will
last approximately 10 years before overcoating may become
desirable.Service life is dependent upon the amount of use/abuse the
coating is subjected to. Surfaces should be free of loose paint, grease,
oil and of any other film-forming foreign material. Sand blasting is
quick, relatively inexpensive and convenient. If this method is
impractical, acidizing with a 10% solution Muriatic (1 acid, 2 water)
acid is the next best thing to provide a clean surface suitable to
receive the two component coating. Hard finished concrete should be
etched to provide "tooth" for adhesion. To acidize, flush the surface
liberally with solution of Muriatic Acid and water; let "injest" for
about twenty minutes or until bubbling stops, then flush liberally with
clear water to remove the acid solution and loose residue form the
surface. Prior to acidizing, surfaces must be free of grease, oil, crud,
and other contaminates. Metals must be free of mill scale, rust, etc.
Wood must be free of old paint, varnish, etc. Optimum results are
obtained if the surface is dry although entirely satisfactory protection
is obtained if the surface is damp and/or wet. Surplus water should be
removed to prevent excessive bubbling of the coating. FGI-305 can even
be applied with a roller under water. MIXING: After preparation is
complete, pot life is in excess of 8 hours at 80 degrees F, so speed is
not necessary. Thoroughly mix activator (part "A") with base (part "B")
for 10 minutes with a power mixer until all streaks and/or lumps
disappear and the mixture has uniform color and consistency. Be sure to
allow mixing blade to rub on sides and bottom of container to recombine
any settling. Allow to stand (or ingest) for at least 45 minutes before
applications. Use of thinner increases possibility of sag and reduces
dry film thickness. For best results, use just as it comes from the can.
Any overspray and equipment must be
cleaned immediately with acetone, toluene, xylene, or MEK.FGI-305 is 75%
solids. Drying time: 4 to 6 hours at 80 F, Complete Cure: 5 to 7 days at
80 F. Apply 16 mils (0.016 inches or 0.41 mm) wet to achieve a final dry
mil thickness of 12 mils (0.012 inches or 0.31 mm). FGI-305 will cover
approximately 100 square feet (9.3 square meter) per gallon at 12 mils
thickness. Use in well ventilated area; if not possible, use a NIOSH
approved self contained breathing apparatus or vapor filters on a mask.
Protective gloves and safety glasses must be worn at all times. Only
very high abrasion will remove the coating. Caution: With the extreme
adhesion characteristics of this product all safety procedures must be
followed.
Customers should consult FGI on all
special requirement installations.
